Small stone. Ridiculous amount of color.

This petite iolite sunstone is only about ¾ inch tall, but look closely and there is an entire sky happening inside it. Deep violet and dusky blue shift into distinct bands of brighter purple, warm orange, pink, and tiny flashes of sunstone sparkle.

The simple prong setting leaves the stone almost completely exposed, and I paired it with a delicate sterling silver station bead chain. Those tiny silver beads catch the light along with the gemstone, giving the whole necklace this really lovely, almost twinkling quality.

It's delicate and easy to wear, but the stone is anything but boring.

The Story

Iolite sunstone fascinates me because it can hold so many versions of the sky in one gemstone.

Look once and it's twilight—deep purple, blue, almost stormy.

Look again and suddenly there's sunset in there. Orange. Pink. Little streaks of fire.

This stone has especially beautiful banding, so you can actually see those colors moving through it rather than simply blending together.

It's the smallest and most delicate piece in this collection, and I kind of love that about it. A tiny piece of sky you can wear every day.
