Iolite Sunstone & Sterling Silver Statement Necklace

This one has presence.

A luminous pear-shaped iolite sunstone hangs at the bottom of a hand-fabricated, softly squared sterling silver frame. The gemstone is about an inch tall and absolutely loaded with purple and pink sunstone sparkle—the kind of fire that appears, disappears, and then lights up somewhere completely different as the stone moves.

I added three tiny silver details along one side of the frame, with another little cluster beside the stone. They remind me of points of light scattered across a night sky, which is where the name came from:

Constellation.

The open silver frame gives this big, fiery gemstone room to breathe. It's substantial without feeling heavy, graphic without being rigid, and just asymmetrical enough to keep your eye moving around the piece.

The Story

One of my favorite things about iolite sunstone is that the magic isn't sitting neatly on the surface waiting for you.

You have to move it.

One second you're looking into deep violet and stormy blue. Then the light catches it and suddenly there are these brilliant little pink and purple sparks scattered everywhere.

Like stars appearing as your eyes adjust to the dark.

That's what this piece became for me.

The three little silver points along the frame echo those sparks inside the gemstone—a tiny constellation continuing beyond the stone and out into the silver.

It feels like a little map of a sky that doesn't actually exist anywhere except inside this particular gemstone.

And that's pretty freaking cool.
