There's something magical about holding a garnet and really taking time to look. Not just a quick glance, but really exploring all the tiny worlds caught within the stone. Often, when I hold one up to the light, I think about how ancient Roman soldiers carried these same gems into battle, believing they offered protection and brought victory.Â
Here's one of my favorite garnet stories that always makes me smile: imagine tiny ants, doing their daily work, accidentally discovering gemstones! In Arizona's Navajo Nation, there's a fascinating phenomenon known as "ant hill garnets." As these industrious insects dig their complex tunnel systems, they actually push up small, beautiful pyrope garnets to the surface.
These special garnets, found in the Four Corners region, are brought up from depths of up to 25 feet below the surface by harvester ants. The ants, while building their homes, consider these gems "unwanted pebbles" and carry them out of their tunnels, creating little collections of garnets around their ant hill entrances. (Talk about one ant's trash being a human's treasure!)
The garnets from these ant hills are usually small but surprisingly high quality, with a deep red color that's absolutely gorgeous. While they're typically under 1 carat, their natural beauty and unique origin story make them especially fascinating. Indigenous peoples have known about and collected these gems for centuries.(And YES! I have some of these beautiful ant-mined garnets if you feel drawn to make a piece with one!)
What makes this discovery method even more incredible is how sustainable and low-impact it is. The ants do all the mining work, bringing the stones to the surface without any need for invasive mining practices.
The name "garnet" comes from "granatum" - meaning pomegranate - and once you know this, you can't unsee the similarity between these deep red gems and those jewel-like pomegranate seeds. But here's what really blows my mind: while we most often see them in that classic deep red, garnets actually form in almost every color. Nature really showed off with this gemstone family!
Speaking of family - garnets aren't just one stone, but a whole group of minerals. They form in metamorphic rocks under intense heat and pressure, creating their unique internal characteristics.
I recently heard that Noah supposedly used a garnet lantern to guide the ark through darkness. This was a new one to me!
These gems have been cherished across cultures and throughout time - from Egyptian pharaohs who took them as precious gifts into the afterlife, to Victorian lovers who exchanged them as tokens of eternal devotion. Some cultures even placed them under pillows to stop nightmares, while travelers carried them as guides for safe journeys home.
What makes garnets extra special for modern jewelry is their durability. These stones are tough enough for daily wear while still maintaining that mysterious glow that's captivated people for centuries. Whether set in silver for a contemporary feel or nestled in gold like those ancient Egyptian pieces, garnets have this amazing ability to feel both timeless and personally meaningful.
In my Woodstock studio, each garnet piece is carefully crafted with these rich traditions in mind. When you wear a garnet, you're not just wearing a beautiful stone - you're carrying a piece of human history, Earth's artistry, millions of years in the making. There's something powerful about wearing a gem that's been considered a stone of commitment, creativity, and passion for thousands of years.
